1957 International metro harvester
Build Time: 6 Months
The first long term project brought to Gallery Garage was a 1957 Metro from Bontá Gelato. Jeff and Juli Labhardt, the owners of Bontá, had visions of turning this old United Airlines luggage carrier into a retro mobile scoop truck.
Gallery Garage began the project in December of 2017, with little more than a bare shell. We took the truck to be sandblasted and immediately knew that the majority of the body would need to be rebuilt. Over the next few months a ton of body work was completed, including fabricating each panel, cutting out a custom concession window, and creating a custom back door.
The guys began with a chassis swap to a 1/2 ton Chevy to modernize the suspension, and did a 5 inch suspension drop. Christopher and Rob installed a SBC 305, full disc brake front end, and 12 bolt posi rear end. The engine work included a 700r automatic overdrive transmission, Headman headers, and an Edelbrock 600 CFM carburetor.
The interior was done with custom wrapped vinyl panels in saddle and cream with black accents. We also installed all new LED lighting, a custom made passenger seat, Lecarra steering wheel, Autometer Old Thyme Gauges, and custom pedals.
When it came time for the paint, we matched Bontá's logo colors and went with a vanilla cream top, chocolate lower, and a mint trim (anyone ready for gelato yet?!). The concession shelf that we created has a personal touch to it. The wood is originally from Christopher's grandfather's barn in Massachusetts; it is a piece of 1954 cherry, and we thought it would be the perfect finishing touch to this '57. Mark over at High Desert Wood Work planed it for us and we sealed it with a bar top lacquer, making it nice and easy to clean up gelato spills. Look out for the Scoop Truck at local Farmer’s Markets and events throughout Bend!
